### Inshore Action Heating Up in Surf City and Topsail Beach
The spring transition is in full swing here on **Topsail Island**, and the fishing is as hot as the weather! With water temperatures hovering in the high 60s and low 70s, the inshore activity has shifted into high gear. Whether you are fishing the flats of **Topsail Sound** or the docks around **Surf City**, now is the time to get on the water.
### **Inshore Species Update**
* **Red Drum (Redfish):** We are seeing a fantastic mix of “over-slot” Reds moving in from the ocean, joining our native slot-sized fish on the flats. The early morning bite has been the most productive. Use **topwater plugs** at first light for some explosive action, or transition to **soft plastics** and **gold weedless spoons** as the sun gets higher.
* **Black Drum:** These guys are hanging tight to oyster rocks and bridge pilings. A fresh piece of **dead shrimp** on a Carolina rig is almost a guaranteed hookup right now.
* **Monster Bluefish:** We’ve had a run of “chopper” blues in the **12lb+ range** showing up near the inlets. They are aggressive and hitting large chunks of cut mullet or big 1 1/8 oz spoons.
* **Spanish Mackerel & Bonito:** The Atlantic Bonito are starting to thin out as they move north, but the **Spanish Mackerel** have officially arrived! Look for birds diving near the inlets and troll small Clarkspoons or cast epoxy jigs into the schools.
### **Captain’s Tips for Mid-May**
> “The water is crystal clear right now, which makes for some incredible sight-fishing opportunities on the flats. However, it also means the fish are a bit spookier. Long casts and lighter leaders (20lb fluorocarbon) will definitely help you put more fish in the boat.” — **Captain Mike Hoffman**
